Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation
Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation, commonly known as “E-Stim”, is the application of a low level electrical current that results in a muscle contraction. When e-stim is performed, electrode pads are placed on the affected muscle groups stimulating the motor nerves to cause a muscle contraction. This modality is painless and often times very relaxing for the patient. E-stim is generally used for those pets that will not use their limb post surgery, pets recovering from back or neck surgery, and to aide in pain management. Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation is best utilized twice weekly to prevent muscle atrophy, muscle re-education for non-ambulatory patients, and muscle strengthening.
